Uses
I am frequently asked about the hardware or software I use. This page will serve as an updated resource for curious developers. This page is inspired by the project uses.tech by Wes Bos.
Desk Setup
- I currently use two laptops as my main machines. The laptops are open on top of black boxes and Twelve South HiRise stands. I also use one external monitor on top of a Satechi Monitor stand. Both laptops are connected to the same external monitor, one via DisplayPort and the other via the HDMI port. On the left is an HP EliteBook 650 G10 with an Intel 13th Gen i7, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB drive provided by my employer. In front is a Dell U2724D UltraSharp 27" QHD monitor. On the right is a MacBook Pro 16-inch - Silver with an M4Pro, 24GB RAM, and a 1TB drive as my personal computer.
- My keyboard is a Logitech MX Keys in graphite color, and I use a Logitech MX Master 3 as my mouse. This setup makes it easy to switch between the two laptops. I also have a Logitech Marathon Mouse M705 that I sometimes use outside my home.
- For connecting other peripherals to the MacBook Pro, I use a UGREEN Revodok Pro 109 USB-C hub.
- For office furniture, I use Portuguese brands. The table is a BuroMóvel Trim with an oak top and black metal legs. I sit on an Alital Silk chair in gray color with steel legs.
HomeLab
- I have two other machines that I use as a mini HomeLab. One serves as a NAS, it's an HP ProLiant MicroServer G7 N54L with 8GB RAM and 2x4TB, 2x1TB drives configured as RAID1 (mirrored), running TrueNAS Core. The other is a Raspberry Pi 4B with 8GB of RAM, booting from an external 512GB drive and running Raspberry Pi OS.
- The Raspberry Pi 4B it is mostly used as a host for running Docker containers.
- These two machines together have a power consumption of around 55W.
Network
- I access the Internet through a Fiber Gateway provided by MEO, the GR241AG model, with 200Mbps download and upload speeds. This also works as a router and Wi-Fi access point. The Wi-Fi supports 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n and 5GHz 802.11 a/n/ac.
- I also use a TP-Link TL-SG108E 8-Port 1Gbps switch, as Ethernet is faster than my current Wi-Fi.
Audio
- My main speakers are the Logitech Z-2300 THX-Certified 2.1. They are from 2004 but still sound great.
- For headphones, I switch between the Sony WH-CH720N, the Sennheiser HD400S, and the Moondrop Aria. The Moondrop Aria is connected through a Linsoul Tripowin Grace Audio Cable with Microphone. I also use the Moondrop option when on the go.
Handhelds
- I currently use two tablets: an Apple iPad Air Space Gray (5th-generation) with 64GB storage, mostly used at night for reading and media consumption, and an Apple iPad Mini 2 Space Gray with a 32GB drive, which is always in the kitchen and mostly used for playing Over-The-Top television.
- My phone is an Apple iPhone 12 in black with 128GB of storage.
Other Gear
- For weekly movie or TV show sessions, I rely on a Samsung QE49Q60R 49” QLED UltraHD 4K TV, a 2019 model that delivers excellent picture quality.
- While I previously gamed on a PlayStation 3 Super Slim with 512GB of storage, I now primarily game on my MacBook Pro using CrossOver and Steam. For controller-compatible games, I use the GameSir Super Nova controller.
- Photography is a hobby of mine, and I currently shoot with a Nikon D3200 paired with a Nikon AF-S DX 18-105mm lens.
Software
- I usually cycle between Windows, macOS, and Linux. For my personal computer, I use macOS.
- I always try to run free and open-source software.
- On macOS, I use Homebrew to easily install and update apps via the terminal.
- For programming, I use Visual Studio Code as my editor.
- As a programming font, I really like Hack, a typeface designed for source code. I use a version with glyphs (icons) patched by Nerd Fonts.
